In fact, the first castle, or rather just a watchtower, was built on the site by the Monaldeschi della Cervara family around the 8th century. During the Renaissance it underwent major transformations. But it was not until 1880 that the castle drastically changed its appearance, when it was purchased by Count Edoardo Cahen d'Anvers, who invited the architect Giuseppe Partini and the gardeners Henri and Achille Duchêne to redesign it in a renewed medieval style - or Gothic Revival - that was so popular in 19th century Europe.
