It was commissioned in 1789 by renowned architect Robert Adam, who used stone from the now non-existent Seton Palace, which is said to have been the favorite home of Mary Queen of Scots. This palace, where the Queen is said to have honeymooned with her second husband Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, before he was murdered, was demolished in 1715, some 200 years after it was built.

Seton Castle was owned by the Wemyss family from the late 18th century until 2003. It has been fully restored. A team of skilled stonemasons rebuilt the castle's many chimneys, turrets and sweeping roof parapets. Restorers gave a kiss of life to the ceilings, French oak floors, sweeping staircase and ironwork, while the 10,000-bottle wine cellar was brought back to life.

Otherwise, the castle has been renovated to meet modern trends. It has central heating and entertainment systems. The castle's slit windows and turrets hide state-of-the-art amenities such as a gym, playroom, huge double AGA kitchen, magnificent silk-lined dining room, billiard room, traditional olde world bar and a movie theater. There are also guest cottages, apartments and even a helipad - all protected by a sophisticated security system.
