‘Rapunzel became the most beautiful child under the sun. When she was twelve years old, the sorceress locked her in a tower that stood in a forest and that had neither a door nor a stairway, but only a tiny little window at the very top.'

These lines will ring a bell to anyone who heard the Grimm Brothers' fairy tale of Rapunzel as a child. The 40-meter tower that the sorceress climbed with Rapunzel's untied braids is believed to be right here - at Burg Trendelburg in Hesse, Germany. The castle is now a hotel where you can stay, enjoy the view from the Rapunzel Tower, get married, and have a delicious medieval dinner.

The historic castle complex was built on a rocky spur above the Diemel valley in the 13th century. The primary purpose of the castle was to protect the important road from Kassel to Bremen. This first castle perished in a massive fire. The present look dates more or less from the 15th century, when the castle was rebuilt after the fire.

Trendelburg Castle that had been a hotel since the late 1940s, was purchased by Privathotels Dr. Lohbeck in 1996. The 40-meter-high Rapunzel Tower with its 7-meter-thick walls was re-opened to the public in 2012 after extensive restoration work that also included the main castle building and the walls, which are now accessible for walking tours.
